Facebook event

Happy new year! We're starting off the new year on an educational note with Lightneer!

Lightneer is a learning game studio dedicated to creating next generation learning games. We have learned through years of research that games are an amazing platform for learning. In fact, every great game is a learning experience.

Schedule:
17:00 Doors open
17:30 Seminar with Lightneer
18:00 Doors close for the seminar
19:00 Doors open, networking & drinks sponsored by Lightneer

The event starts off with a seminar featuring two great speakers with topics on game learning:

Lauri Järvilehto, CEO, Lightneer
Lauri Järvilehto is the CEO and Co-Founder of Lightneer, setting out to bring high quality learning to everybody everywhere and scaling the inclusivity of Finnish education globally. Lauri is a learning enthusiast, serial entrepreneur and a Sherlock Holmes fan. He has a PhD in theoretical philosophy and is the founder of the Academy of Philosophy in Finland. He has also written several bestselling books on learning and thinking.

Towards The Future of Game Learning:
People play on average over two hours of mobile games every day. Could we take a chunk of those two hours and direct it to something that is as much fun – but where you also learn things, ranging from particle physics to biology, from history to new languages? Learning games need to be as much fun to play as the best games out there. Otherwise, players will choose another game to play.

Learning games should not compete with traditional learning, but rather offer a missing piece in the puzzle: a way to bridge the gap between casual fun and deep learning. Key to this is stealth learning: learning that happens even when the player does not realize it’s happening. In our physics game Big Bang Legends, you collect quarks, build protons and create atoms, eventually creating the entire periodic table of elements. The game does not teach you anything – but while you play, you learn the fundamental hierarchy of particle physics!

Fun and engaging learning belongs to everybody, regardless of where they were born. We want to build a revolution in learning that will spark the love of learning in millions of people.

Santeri Koivisto, CEO, TeacherGaming, LLC
Santeri Koivisto started his career in edtech while playing Minecraft with his students in 2010. Very soon after that started the development of MinecraftEdu that lead to one of the only exits in games in education when MinecraftEdu was sold to Microsoft mid 2016. Currently working as the CEO of 5 More Minutes on the same field sorting out the obstacles educators have when it comes to using games in their work.

Lessons learned from 15k+ schools and MinecraftEdu:
Some say that 'Game-Based learning market' is to grow past $10B in the next five years, but that doesn't remove the fact our educators are still working on three core challenges: content, quality and media literacy. Let's take a look back what we learned from the MinecraftEdu era and what are the 'keys' to unlock even a bigger impact on this field in the future.
